I recently came across a rare vintage stock of Galalith produced by the famed Établissements Feuillant, the last major French manufacture of galalite.

Galalith is a synthetic plastic discovered in the late 19th century and popularized during the Art-Deco period of the early 20th century. Galalith is considered to be the only real alternative to Tortoiseshell, which used to be the golden standard plectrum material. Despite its popularity, the material was discontinued in the mid-70s due to its inability to be molded, causing it to fall out of favor with commercial users. Galalith is made from the interaction of casein and formaldehyde, resulting in an extremely hard material that is difficult to polish to a high gloss. However, its hardness makes it an excellent imitation of gemstones, with a strikingly realistic appearance. It's surprising to note that Galalith is a bio-plastic, making it biodegradable despite being a plastic.

The Établissements Feuillant (in Ézy-sur-Eure, France) played a unique role: during the German occupation in World War II, production of galalithe in France was restricted, and Feuillant became essentially the sole permitted producer of galalite in the country.

After the war, the firm continued as a leading (indeed one of the last) makers of casein-based plastics in France, catering largely to the haberdashery, jewelry, and button industries.
By the 1970s, competition from synthetic resins made from petrochemicals (cheaper, easier to mass-produce) severely challenged Feuillant’s business.

In December 1981, the liquidation of the company was made effective, marking the end of French production of casein hardened plastics.

To hold a piece of this material — transformed now into a musical accessory — is to connect the artistic to a fragment of industrial history. It’s a small relic of a disappearing era in French materials craftsmanship.

Creating a single plectrum from this rare material is a labor-intensive process that takes approximately an hour to handcraft. But the end result is worth it - each plectrum is a unique and beautiful work of art.
