Technical audio explanation
Galalith material
I recently came across a rare vintage stock of Galalith produced by Établissements Feuillant, the last major French manufacturer of this material.
Galalith is a synthetic plastic discovered in the late 19th century and widely used during the Art Deco period. It is considered the only true alternative to tortoiseshell.
It was discontinued in the mid-1970s because it cannot be injection moulded, making it incompatible with modern industrial production. It is created from casein and formaldehyde, resulting in a very hard material with a unique tactile and tonal response.
Despite being classified as a plastic, Galalith is a bio-material and remains biodegradable.
Historical context
Établissements Feuillant, based in Ézy-sur-Eure, became effectively the sole authorised Galalith producer in France during World War II.
After the war, the company supplied various industries until petrochemical plastics replaced it. The company was liquidated in 1981, marking the end of French production of casein-based plastics.
Holding this material today, transformed into a musical accessory, connects directly to a fragment of industrial history and craftsmanship.
Each plectrum requires approximately one hour of work. Every piece is unique.
