Solid brass plectrum
Some materials simply have character.
Solid brass has been used by guitarists for decades for its distinctive playing feel, durability and immediate tonal response. Compared with conventional polymer plectrums, brass produces a particularly bright and articulate attack, with strong note definition and a precise connection between the hand and the strings.
This newly designed plectrum combines the unmistakable character of solid brass with a raised Hufschmid emblem that represents both my name and my approach to craftsmanship.
The meaning behind the emblem
My surname, Hufschmid, originates from the German words Huf, meaning horseshoe, and Schmied, meaning smith or blacksmith.
The horseshoe and hammer are therefore much more than a decorative logo. They represent my family name, traditional metalworking and the principle of creating functional objects intended to last.
The emblem also reflects the connection between the historic craft of the smith and my own work as an independent guitar and plectrum maker.
Struck directly into the brass
The emblem is not printed or conventionally engraved. It is struck directly into the solid brass, creating a genuine three-dimensional relief in the surface of the plectrum.
Producing this type of detailed impression in brass requires considerable pressure and precision. The result is a permanent raised design that gives every plectrum a distinctive tactile identity.
The reverse is individually laser engraved with the Patrick Hufschmid name and Switzerland marking.
Grip and ergonomics
The raised emblem is not merely decorative. Its relief creates a tactile gripping surface that helps the plectrum remain securely positioned between the fingers.
This additional texture improves control and stability while preserving the clean and compact shape of the plectrum. The player can immediately feel its orientation without needing to look at it.
Key benefits
✔ Bright and articulate attack with strong note definition.
✔ Solid brass construction with a distinctive weight and playing response.
✔ Raised emblem providing additional tactile grip.
✔ Improved control and stability between the fingers.
✔ Durable laser engraving on the reverse.
✔ Protective lacquer coating to help minimise oxidation.
Satin finish and protective lacquer
Each plectrum has a finely brushed satin surface that highlights the natural warm colour and texture of the brass.
A transparent protective lacquer is applied to help minimise oxidation and preserve the original appearance of the metal. The protective coat preserves the original satin appearance while allowing the plectrum to be played normally.
As with any frequently handled musical accessory, the surface and protective coating may gradually develop signs of use over time. These marks form part of the natural character of a genuine metal plectrum.
The character of brass
Brass has a long history in musical instrument making. Its combination of hardness, density, durability and acoustic character has made it an important material for instrument components, strings and accessories.
Used as a plectrum, it offers a direct and highly defined response that differs fundamentally from softer materials. It is intended for players seeking a distinctive tactile and tonal experience rather than the behaviour of a conventional plastic pick.
Like all my designs, this plectrum follows a simple principle: every element must serve a purpose. The material defines its tonal character, the struck emblem expresses its identity and provides grip, while the protective finish helps preserve its appearance.
